We have begun a new unit on historical fiction
Students have spent some time comparing and contrasting this genre with our non-fiction unit.
New book club books have been assigned.
This week students are working on understanding how the history can play a strong and emotional role within character development and conflicts of a fictional story.
Please look for the informational reading packets that have or may still be coming home regarding the historical time frame that your child's book club books takes place during. They are readworks articles.
Seeing that all of our books take place during tumultuous times in history, please continue the conversation at home. Please also ask your child to share any concerns or questions they may have regarding their novel, inappropriate language, or conflict within the informational packets. We have also have and will continue to discuss these issues during our Workshop as well.
The following are the historical times/conflicts being read about
Holocaust
WWII
The potato Famine
Immigration and discrimination
Segregation during 1960's
The Navaho Migration and conflict between Native Americans and Early Colonial Settlers moving westward.
Again, please continue to have conversations regarding these conflicts to help support your child digest these tough topics within history.
WRITERS WORKSHOP
Students have begun publishing their non-fiction books.
We will continue adding/revising the following areas
Text features, headings, sub-topic paragraphs, a glossary, an index, a table of contents, and a dedication page. We will continue this until all students feel their books are where they would like them to be according to the fourth grade informational rubric.
