Oct 10-14
This week we are moving into a deeper study of themes, lessons, and author's message.
We will dig deep into several short stories with strong themes including, perseverance, kindness, inner strength and beauty, as well as not judging others by their looks or appearance. Students will also be shown the "5 finger summary method" (somebody, wanted but, so, then) to best summarize the books they read. Students are also continuing to practice past strategies including character studies, conflict/resolution, and story elements during their independent reading in order to build their Reader's Response letter that is due Nov. 1st. All past strategies have been added to our Reader's interactive notebooks.
These are to be worked on in class . All students should be working on their Story Board Projects, outside of class. (posted in our Reader's GoogleClassroom) ** See the Power Point attached*** This has been shown to all students in class.
Last, your child has become a part of a small guided reading group within our workshop that allows us to take a close look at our reading strategies and discuss the chapters we read together. The chapter books have been chosen according to your child's DRA reading level. Ask your child which novel they are reading in their "guided reading/literature group" in class.
Learning Targets for this week.
I can continue monitoring my theories about the characters I read and notice any subtle changes to help me make predictions and inferences within my book.
I can ask questions and make predictions based on my characters subtle or major changes
I can understand how a story contains "story elements" to help engage the reading
(setting, rising action, conflict, climax, resolution, falling actions, etc) .
I can determine the heart of the story based on the characters change/growth or lack of change
