March
Students have worked very hard on their meteorology reports as well as studies of Biomes. Students have take their post test. These will be added to their leadership notebooks the week of March 6th.
From here, we will be transitioning into 2 different units.
The first being a study of plants, adaptations, and classification. In order to better enhance our science curriculum and our plant unit, we will be visiting the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens in the end of May. I will keep you posted on further details laters.
STEAM FAIR . . .
Over the next several weeks, students will also be assigned groups to create a display/game for our STEAM Fair this April. This game will be based off of the 3rd grade science curriculum. Please ask your child to explain to your the goal for this year's fair. We will take class time to dive into designing, building, and presenting these games for the STEAM fair. You child will use the 8 Engineers practices to help establish, design, and execute this project.
Here is a look at the proposal which will come home with your child (proposals are due to the teacher on March 6th so we can confer with groups to help them tweak and adapt their ideas if need be). Final proposals will be sent to the district, Friday, March 10th.
Northville Schools STEAM Fair Proposal Form
April 26, 2017
Hillside Middle School
7th grade visit: 9:00-10:45AM
4th grade visit: 12:15-2:30PM
Community event: 6:00-8:00PM
We need you! We are hosting our third annual STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) event for our students and their families on April 26. The theme is “Dream It, Create It, and Play It” which is a focus on using engineering and design to create toys and games. Through a generous donation from the Northville Education Foundation, and our partnerships with community companies, we are able to provide an exciting, hands-on learning opportunity for our students and families.
Our goal is to have EVERY school represented whether it is a student designed and led activity that takes place during the day, or a project to display examples of student created toys and games —the possibilities are endless!!! Students attending during the day and families that participate in the evening will be exposed to at least 8 different hands-on activities. Many of the activities have been designed by students.
In order to aid in our planning, please complete the proposal form by Friday, March 10, 2017. We are asking for the proposal form so activities, experiments, etc. are not duplicated. If this were to happen, we would work with you to “tweak” it. This is a fantastic opportunity to ask your students how they would like to be involved; you don’t have to do all of the thinking, let them!
For more information, check out the STEAM fair website: http://www.northvillesteamfair.com/
Please feel free to contact me (Deanna) if you have questions. You may need a great deal of clarification and I can’t address it all here. We encourage you to be creative and to get involved!
PROPOSAL EXPLANATION: Some activities may be led by your students at the event. Other activities may just be on display at the event. Plan on approximately 240 students visiting your station (120 in a.m. & 120 in p.m.). Please indicate in the description if this is an ON-SITE STUDENT LED ACTIVITY or a DISPLAY ONLY activity!
TEACHER NAME: Cheryl Brooks
SCHOOL: Amerman & Winchester
GRADE LEVEL/CONTENT AREA: Art
Please give as much detail as possible.
1) Describe the activity: Students will play the “Keva Planks Challenge” when they visit the station. Keva Planks are designed as a brain building activity. The students look at a 2D image and try and build the image in 3D with small wood planks.
2) Activity Steps. List the steps for this project. What will the students be expected to do?
Teacher will present a 2D picture of a 3D composition of the Keva Planks. The team of students will then try and “beat” another team to complete the construction “first.
3) Timeline. Provide a tentative timeline for the steps of this project. How long from explanation to finished product? (If it is an ON-SITE STUDENT LED ACTIVITY, each rotation is 15 minutes with approximately 15-18 students in each group).
The timing can be adjusted to number of students/time = we just play until the time is done.
4) What supplies do you need? Provide an estimated budget, please.
I will need set of Keva Planks - a box of 200 is about $85.00 plus shipping and handling. I would like to have stickers to present the “winners.” I could purchase the stickers from Oriental Trading for approximately $25.00.
5) In your best estimate, how much space will you need?
I will need a table/or two and a couple of chairs.
6) Do you need an electrical outlet? Presentation table?
It would be great if I could have an electrical outlet - I would probably put the images of the building challenges on PowerPoint presentation so they would be larger and easier to see. I would use a laptop computer.
7) How many people will be facilitating your station (we will be providing lunch)?
I would be facilitating and I could do it alone or I could invite some 5th graders maybe 2-3 from Amerman.
