Nov 14-18, 21-22
We are beginning our study of non-fiction/information text. At the end of last week, we dove into exploring text features and what kind of information is gained from each kind.
Types studied included text boxes, timelines, headings and sub headings, photographs, captions, diagrams, graphs, maps, and types of lists.
This week and next, students will practice different methods that help identify the main idea of an informational text and separate it from their own thinking and responses to the text. Some of these methods include reading with a pencil and making 2 to 3 column charts separating facts from our own reflections. We will begin with making 3 column chart called, a TDR chart. Ask you child by the end of next week (before Thanksgiving) to explain what a TDR chart is and why we use it.
Students are continuing to work on language standards within both Reader's and Writer's Workshop including personification, grammar, and convention rules.
Students should continue to read Razkids and/or a just right book at home with a goal of a minimum of 150 minutes a week.
We are also continuing our book club books which currently are fictional books.
WRITERS WORKSHOP
Students will be writing a short persuasive story from a different point of view this week. . . . a tukey's! Look for these to come home Wednesday!
We have begun our opinion/persuasive essay unit. At the end of last week, your child took the pre-test for this unit. These will be added to their leadership notebooks with a graded rubric just as our Narrative ones have been added. Students will chose a goal to work on over the course of the 2nd quarter. These goals will be written by the end of this week. Be sure to ask your child which area they will focus on when writing the persuasive essays.
Ask your child by the end of next week, what issue they have decided to write about. They may take their leadership binders home to show you. These do need to return the next day!
***Students need to make sure they have submitted their online Scripsi stories to me by November 16th! These should arrive back by Dec. 16th.
