Jan 16-20
Students now have a new weekly assignment to complete Mobymax Language for 30 minutes total every week, outside of school, for language standards practice.
Last, we we dove into a great discussion regarding Martin Luther King Jr's life and goals after reading the picture book called"Marin's Big Words." We discussed concepts including perseverance, racism, segregation, and much more. We also had a great discussion after viewing the movie Ruby Bridges comparing Ruby and her family's beliefs and dreams to Martin Luther Kind Jr and his dreams for our future. We also compared and contrasted their goals with societies' goals during that historical time frame.
This week, students will be continuing to read non-fiction, biographies, and historical fiction while continuing to practice summarizing, comparing, contrasting, and finding common themes.
Please ask your child to verbally summarize to you the chapter or pages read in his/her book club book. Also, try and help make connections to historical figures and/or events.
WRITERS WORKSHOP
Last week students reviewed their graded persuasive essays and decided if they did or did not meet their goals. These reflections were placed in student leadership binders. We also started our next unit on non-fiction where students chose and area of expertise and completed a brain storm/graphic organizer to see if this was truly an area of expertise.
These graphic organizers were glued into the writing interactive notebook.
This week we will be choosing and writing new goals for this next unit, based off of the 4th grade non-fiction writing rubric. We will also be using their written brainstorms to begin organizing thoughts. By the end of the week, your child should have completed the next graphic organizer which will help them organize his/her thoughts into sub categories or chapters eventually making it easier to elaborate while remaining "on-topic.
