Oct 17-21
This past week students have explored different ways to comprehend the fictional books they are reading including summarizing using the quick hand method of "Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then.
We are continuing to explore different examples of author's message.
Students are expected to continue reading their just right books inside and outside of school in order to meet his/her 40-book challenge. During our Reader's Workshop, students have been reading and responding to their books by writing a Reader's Response Letter. Requirements can be found within our Google Classroom called Reader's Workshop.
This week we will practice comparing and contrasting the protagonist and antagonist. We will also relate our characters behaviors to qualities similar to (or lack there of) the 7 habits.
All students should be continue working on their Story Board Projects, outside of class. (also posted in our Reader's Google Classroom) ** See the Power Point attached*** This has been shown to all students in class. To complete our Character Study, study will be required to present their boards, in the costume of either their protagonist or antagonist. I will send a letter home with the presentation date. Presentations will most likely occur in the MPR. You are more than welcome to visit us on this day!
Students are also working on language standards within both Reader's and Writer's Workshop. This week we are studying strong verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. A great place for your child to practice these standards are within Mobymax's language tab. Feel free to have them work on this at home. They are also using this within our Workshop as well. They have taken the pretest in class, and will be worked with in small groups according to the data gained from their pretests.
Last, your child is continuing his/her small guided reading group within our workshop. Each group is on chapter 3 of their novels. Ask you child what predictions they have about chapters 4 and 5 this week. (Books are different for some groups) Within these groups, we are focusing on applying our newly learned reading comprehension strategies, discussing our findings, making predictions, as well as, discussing unknown words and using context clues to help us determine the meaning.
Raz kinds has been set up according to your child's lexile range taken from the fall NWEA data.
WRITERS WORKSHOP
Students are continuing to work on their personal narratives in order to publish their individual books by Nov 16th. We have begun publishing these books in Scripsi. Students are also expected to revise their stories by applying the following elaboration techniques; writing in slow motion, adding sensory details, using vivid verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. They will continue adding strong examples into their Writer's Interactive Notebook. These can be used while revising their stories in Scripsi.
Students are also expected to upload at least two hand-drawn illustrations into Scripsi. They can also use google images and clip art for their final publications.
As students are typing within Scripsi, they are to use the rubric (handed back with their pretests, located in their leadership biders) , to make sure that the are working towards making progress within their academic wigs for writing.
